Dr. Evelyn Li, Candidate for Congressional District 17
Over the past decade, the US Congress has created a nation that is overwhelmingly dispirited and apprehensive due to overspending. Although we may sometimes enjoy the multitudinous features of our government-granted benefits, the truth is that we’ve outspent our means. We cannot afford our wants, and we need to face the fact that we are and have been robbing our posterity from the wealth they rightly deserve by spending it on this generation. This upward-spiraling sense of entitlement has caused us to lose our freedom to our growing list of creditors (including China), and has made it increasingly difficult to meet our basic needs as a nation.
We must remember that America’s strength in the world comes not only from our economic prowess and abundance of natural resources, but also -- and especially -- our legacy of American-born values (such as duty, integrity, and accountability) and our financial solidarity. But we have been losing this reputation and reality of America, because of good intentions and poor investments. We must work together to fight against policies and laws that unwittingly bankrupt our future to “enrich” us today. Let’s not be fooled that a great America is an America with great benefits. A great America is one that incentivizes, recognizes, and rewards innovation, industry, accountability, and integrity. That is how the fledgling America surpassed all the industrialized nations to become the #1 country in the world, and that is how we need to run our country to keep it that way.
We can reverse this recent decline in moral thinking and well-intentioned -- but poorly-managed -- policy making, and restore America to its once-bright identity. Let’s embark on a journey of real change. Let’s bring back America to our formidable legacy of down-to-earth values, and inspire our people to trust our government again.
